da bet esporte: Having started just under half of Manchester City’s Premier League games last season in their record-breaking, title-winning campaign, Bernardo Silva struggled to show his best talents to English football as Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva ran riot with Fernandinho screening behind them.
However, with the Belgian playmaker struggling for fitness this season, £43m man Silva has had to step up to the mantle, and boy has he done so.
So far this term, the former Monaco star has started all but two of the Cityzens’ league games, and has made a big impact on the side. The 24-year-old is just one goal away from matching his tally from the entirety of last season, with five strikes to his name, whilst he has already added two assists to his previous tally of four – the improvement has been significant, and strikingly obvious.

The Portuguese international has made a name for himself in football as a silky smooth operator, who goes about his business without even breaking a sweat and to great effect – his teammates at Monaco even nicknamed him ‘Pastilha’, meaning ‘bubblegum’ as a reference to the way in which the ball seems stuck to his foot.
Against Liverpool, however, there was an industrious approach seldom seen from the diminutive midfielder throughout his time at the Etihad – Silva absolutely ran his socks off, and earned the highest of praise from his boss Pep Guardiola after the game.
Speaking after his side cut the Reds’ lead at the top to four points, the Spaniard said: “Bernardo did everything. He is the smallest one but shows us that to play football you don’t have to be taller or more physical. He is incredible. I haven’t seen a performance like that in a while.”
The praise for Silva is wholly justified. We all know that he is an exceptional operator with the ball, showcased by his impressive 83.3% passing accuracy, as well as his two completed dribbles and one key pass which led to the opening goal – a rifled strike by Sergio Aguero.
However, what really caught the eye was his defensive work against arguably the best side in England right now. Silva made three tackles, more than any of his teammates barring the impeccable ball-winner Fernandinho, whilst he also managed to complete four interceptions – two more than the next closest City player completed.
We saw a side to the playmaker’s game that we have rarely seen before. Perhaps it was down to the nature of the game, in which anything other than a win would’ve made it extremely tough for City to regain their trophy.
What we do know, however, is that Guardiola has a man he can count on in Silva, and one that can adapt his game to what the situation requires, which will be invaluable to the champions in this enthralling title race.
