Reports this week have linked Ipswich with a couple big target men as Paul Jewell looks for more striking options ahead of next season.
So far, Jewell has played formations only using one main striker which has often left Michael Chopra isolated upfront and struggling to make an impact. A big striker could possibly give the squad a different dimension and oppourtunity to mix things up by playing more direct when need be. Fans will always want to see their team playing attractive football but that style doesn’t always bring the results needed for promotion.
When Ipswich were last in the play-offs under Joe Royle, they had the strike force of Darren Bent and Shefki Kuqi which allowed the team to play either direct or indirect, depending on what worked best against their opponent.
Additionally, looking across the teams that have done well in the Championship this season it is clear to see that if you want to finish in the top 6 you need to be able to play direct, as well as being able to play a good passing game.
Ipswich have bought a lot of players who are capable of passing the ball around neatly and the fans always expect any new arrival to be able to fit in with a short passing game.
However, whilst it has been pleasing to see the team try to play good football, Ipswich have been very one dimensional for a while now and Paul Jewell needs a plan B for when the passing game isn’t working. Sometimes you need to be able to throw on a big man and play a slightly cruder style of football to get the results and whilst fans might not like the thought of this at first, they will always be happy if it brings the right results.
Ipswich fans will be very unhappy if the rumours are true that Jewell is after Aaron Wilbraham though. Wilbraham, 32 years old, has just been released by Norwich City and would provide Jewell with a cheap way to bring a big man into the club. It definitely wouldn’t be a popular choice as not only do Ipswich fans dislike the idea of signing a former Norwich player, they want to see younger signings join the club because so many older players have been complete let downs recently.
A more attractive rumour has been that Jewell is after striker Björn Bergmann Sigurdarson. The 21-year-old Icelander is currently playing in the Norwegian Premier League for Lillestrøm and has been scoring a lot of goals recently. Unfortunately, making a bid for Sigurdarson would probably be a bit ambitious as the young striker is more likely to make a bigger move over the summer if he is going to leave Lillestrøm.
If Ipswich want to sign a young striker who can play as a big target man then their best hope could be to wait and see if Connor Wickham becomes available for a loan move. Wickham has been told by his manager that he will have until the end of pre-season to try to make the Sunderland first team and only then will a decision be made on whether he will be available.
Another problem could be that other Championship clubs are looking to get Wickham on loan if possible which would leave Ipswich hoping he would favour a return to Portman Road. It is probably safe to say that Ipswich will have a new striker by the end of the summer and all fans can do is hope they don’t end up with another Nathan Ellington.
