da dobrowin: Crystal Palace’s January transfer business was far from impressive. The Eagles landed Cenk Tosun on a temporary deal before he had to go back to Everton because of an ACL injury while the only permanent acquisition was that of Scott Banks. The teenager arrived at Selhurst Park with little fanfare – the 18-year-old had only just burst onto the scene in Scotland.Banks, an attacking midfielder by trade, refused to sign a new deal at Dundee and as a result, the Scottish side refused to play him.The result? A contract at Premier League Crystal Palace. Their January addition has yet to play for Roy Hodgson’s side but is enjoying a relatively successful loan spell with Alloa Athletic in the second tier of Scotland.Banks has featured on four occasions since linking up with the Wasps and in that time he’s bagged himself an assist.
However, it was a moment of magic last weekend against Inverness Caledonian Thistle that really made fans stand up and take notice.
The midfielder danced around a plethora of Inverness defenders with a piece of dazzling skill. It was a glimpse of a footballer with a bright future, although he did spurn the shooting opportunity he then had.
The skill and dribbling ability involved made you instantly think of Wilfried Zaha. The Ivorian is a player known for having a trick in his locker and he’s shown on a consistent basis that he has the ability to beat players in jaw-dropping fashion as Banks did last weekend.
Zaha is one of the trickiest players to deal with in the Premier League, amassing 4.7 dribbles per game and being fouled 3.2 times on average each outing.
Banks is a long way from replicating those dizzy heights but this was just a small indication of the type of player he can be.
It’s clear he possesses an element of flair and class that would fit right in at Palace and Hodgson should be drooling over the prospect of finally get a chance to manage him.
Where the teenager would fit into the manager’s plans remains to be seen, especially for someone who hasn’t had a liking for Palace’s creative players. Victor Camarasa made just one appearance for the Eagles while Max Meyer has started only six top-flight matches this term.
Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….
Hodgson may have to change his ways in order to accommodate Banks going forward, but it might be worth it if he shows the flashes of skills he’s now started to produce in Scotland.
Meanwhile, Palace are eyeing a deal for someone valued at £45m in January…
