da realsbet: Manchester United have been linked with a move for Philippe Coutinho, but should they capitalise on his nightmarish stint at Barcelona?
According to Mundo Deportivo, Coutinho has had a “change of heart” at Barcelona and is ready to quit the Catalan club.
The little playmaker left Liverpool for the La Liga giants in January 2018, but has been crucified by the fans at the Camp Nou for his poor performances.
Still, he has managed 21 goals and 11 assists since the move, and the report claims United are interested in a swoop.
The Red Devils would have to cough up €100m (£88m) to secure his signature say Mundo Deportivo, and some of the writers at Football FanCast have given their verdict on a potential move…
Luke Glanville
“Manchester United have made some very expensive disastrous attacking signings in recent years and Philippe Coutinho for £88 million would be just another example of one of those. Yes, the arrival of such a huge name would be a great propaganda tool for Woodward and may even please large sections of the fan base. However, I could just see this being another big money for the Old Trafford club and therefore, a move they should avoid at all costs. Coutinho has done it in the Premier League before, but that clearly means nothing if the player’s head is not right.”
Christy Malyan
“This has all the makings of another Alexis Sanchez – bringing a player in based on reputation and availability rather than whether he actually suits the needs of the team. And in fact, surely Coutinho would share many of the issues Sanchez is suffering at Old Trafford, namely the sheer number of players he’d face for a role on the left wing (Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and indeed Sanchez) and his penchant to drift inside into the left channel areas that Paul Pogba likes to do his best work in. Coutinho is a real talent but it’s hard to imagine how he’d fit into the same side as Pogba, and this feels like a move mostly motivated by winding up Liverpool.”
Jack Saville
“Signing Coutinho would be another futile statement of intent from Ed Woodward. Pipping Manchester City to the signatures of both Alexis Sanchez and Fred has achieved the square route of zero at Old Trafford and, as much as they would love to wind up another rival by luring the former Liverpool player to the club, it’s a deal which makes absolutely no sense. The club need a serious rethink over how they operate in the transfer market and strengthening their defensive options must be the priority.”

“This would certainly sting for Liverpool if Manchester United were able to lure one of the Anfield club’s most coveted former stars back to the Premier League. £88m is a lot to spend, especially given some of the fees United have thrown around in recent times. However, in Coutinho, they’d know they’d be getting someone who can thrive in the Premier League so a move shouldn’t be questioned. His quality is supreme and a move back to English shores could be exactly what he needs to reignite his career. This is a deal Woodward can afford to make.”
